The Convergence Scenario

The year 2007 is touted to be the year of ICT - rural connectivity, broadband, 3G, enterprise and entertainment bulge, mobile content, e-governance, increase in PC penetration, Information Security and telemedicine, etc.

It’ll be the year when Indian teledensity will rise from its current level of 12% to 25% by the end of 2007 – adding 150 million telephones between March 2006 and December 2007. This will also be the year when the central government expects its e-governance set up to be on the road to completion. Also, State governments will set up their data networks (SWANs) to reach all block headquarters.

Watch out for the excitement that this expanding communications infrastructure will bring in 2007. We could see all 600,000 Indian villages connected by the end of the year if Mission 2007, which promises to set up a knowledge center in every village, is successful. This would mean 600,000 centers with PCs, printers, web cameras, broadband connections, power back up and so on.

Additionally, the entertainment sector will see DTH in more homes, as well as the beginning of interactive cable. The list goes on and on – telemedicine, on-line education, more content on mobile phones, enterprise services, IT applications in financial services, e-commerce… the excitement is just beginning.

In short, 2007 will be the year of fulfillment.
